When this warning light shows up, you still have a bit of time to take your car in for a check up and repair, although it would be a good idea to do so as soon as possible. If your check engine light shows up red however, you have a more serious situation on your hands. With such a warning light, it is absolutely necessary to get your car off the road as soon as possible without compromising your safety or that of the other motorists on the road. Make sure that you do so as safely as possible however, as getting into a fender bender at this crucial juncture would only make your problems worse. A red check engine light means that you already have a pretty serious situation to deal with, and you certainly don't want to make things any worse by becoming involved in a pile up! In the case of a yellow or amber check engine light, the most common cause would be a malfunction in one of the electronic components of the engine.
